Why It Matters

Five Reasons Kelly Summerford Strengthens the PA Democratic Black Caucus

  • 01
He Brings a Voice No One Else in the Room Has Most political organizations are filled with attorneys, consultants, and career operatives. Kelly Summerford is a working artist, a former city councilman, a labor union technologist, a child welfare system professional, and a cultural institution builder. That breadth of lived experience gives him a perspective on what Black communities actually need that a purely political resume cannot replicate.
  • 02
He Has Sustained Cultural Programming for 15 Years Directing the MLK Performing Artists Showcase for fifteen consecutive years is not a passive role. It requires funding, organizing, artist relationships, venue coordination, and community trust. The same skills that sustain a cultural institution for fifteen years are the skills that build a political chapter that lasts. Kelly knows how to build things that endure.
  • 03
He Has Served on Both Sides of Government As a Harrisburg City Councilman, Kelly sat inside government making decisions. Through his work with CASSP, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, the Office of Mental Health, and various community boards, he has also served government from the outside as an advocate, technologist, and community liaison. He understands how policy is made and how communities experience its effects. Both sides matter.
  • 04
He Is a Connector Across Communities From the Screen Actors Guild to the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO to the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet to Historic Harrisburg to the U.S. Federal Courthouse Arts Panel, Kelly Summerford has built relationships across every sector of Harrisburg civic life. That network is political infrastructure. The Democratic Black Caucus builds power by connecting communities. Kelly already has the connections.
  • 05
Harrisburg Is His Home and He Has Never Stopped Investing in It Kelly Summerford is a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania who has spent his entire career, from the AFL-CIO to CASSP to City Council to the MLK Showcase, investing in his home city. That rootedness matters. The caucus chapter in the Harrisburg region is stronger for having a founding member whose commitment to this community is biographical, not just organizational.
